The Power of 3D Laser Scanning in Enhancing Car Performance

Written by SCANTECH 3D

What makes it possible for car enthusiasts to constantly seek the boundaries of performance and design? One of the most groundbreaking advancements in recent years is the use of 3D scanning technology.

This innovative tool is transforming the way car enthusiasts approach redesign and re-manufacturing by offering unparalleled precision and efficiency.

By capturing highly accurate measurements of car components, portable 3D scanners allow for the creation of customized parts that enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of sports cars.

Whether it’s recreating rare components for classic models or optimizing the aerodynamics of modern vehicles, 3D scanning is making it an indispensable asset for those passionate about high-performance cars.

A renowned automotive engineering company KTEC Racing uses Scantech’s SIMCSAN handheld 3D laser scanner to streamline workflows, enhance accuracy, and unlock new creative possibilities for high-performance cars.

Introduction of the Client

KTEC Racing, a leading UK company, specializes in providing high-performance upgrades and expert services for Renault Sport models including the Megane, Clio, and Twingo.

With nearly two decades of experience, they offer a comprehensive range of services, including ECU remapping, suspension upgrades, and advanced braking systems.

Known for innovation and quality, KTEC Racing provides top-tier products from brands like Airtec Motorsport and Wagner Tuning.

Their expert team and cutting-edge technology make them a top choice for automotive performance enthusiasts worldwide, offering tailored solutions for bodywork, engines, exhausts, and safety equipment.

Limits of Previous Measurement Methods

In the past, the process of measuring parts for design relied heavily on manual drawings. Unfortunately, this approach was both time-consuming and susceptible to human errors.

Engineers and designers spent significant hours meticulously sketching out dimensions, risking inaccuracies that could impact the final product.

Scantech’s 3D Solutions

KTEC reached out to Scantech’s reseller The 3D Measurement Company to acquire advanced 3D scanning.

The integration of the SIMSCAN handheld 3D scanner has significantly transformed KTEC’s operations by enabling them to obtain precise 3D data efficiently and collaborate with manufacturers worldwide.

This cutting-edge 3D scanning technology represents a substantial upgrade over traditional measurement methods.

SIMSCAN 3D Scanner

SIMSCAN is a palm-sized, portable 3D laser scanner designed specifically for scanning narrow and hard-to-reach areas. Its full-metal housing ensures it is both sturdy and reliable.

Due to its compact size, simplicity, and robust performance, SIMSCAN has become a must-have tool for measurement and inspection.

Using this metrology-grade 3D measurement instrument with an accuracy of up to 0.020 mm, users can accurately capture every detail of objects and quickly construct 3D models.

3D Scanning Megane 4RS KTR Intake

Thanks to the portable 3D scanner SIMSCAN and its high measurement rate of up to 2.8 million measurements/s, KTEC efficiently captured the general shape of the intake’s OEM design.

They then employed 3D software to meticulously recreate and modify the design, specifically removing interior pieces to optimize the model.

Furthermore, KTEC used 3D software’s flow simulations to validate that the new design maintained the original airflow characteristics, ensuring that the performance remained at its peak.

The revised CAD model was subsequently sent to the manufacturer, who produced the new intake based on these precise specifications. This process not only streamlined their workflow but also guaranteed that the final product met the high standards required for optimal functionality.

3D Scanning Megane 4RS Bonnet and Diffuser

KTEC has scanned the bonnet and diffuser of their Megane 4RS demo car.

These high-resolution scans will be utilized to manufacture CNC aluminium parts, ensuring all crucial mountings are accurately captured. SIMSCAN 3D scanner’s high resolution of 0.020 mm ensures detailed archives of car components.

Scanning Small Components

The SIMSCAN excels at capturing small objects with precision. It flawlessly scans items like a gloss black waste-gate cover or intricate details within larger parts.

For instance, the Clio V6 airbox scan provided detailed and tolerance-accurate data for 3D printing, resulting in a high-quality final product.

Large Development Work

For large projects, the scanner is indispensable, enabling KTEC to rapidly and accurately scan entire engine bays or car corners without needing to keep multiple vehicles on-site. Examples include:

Hyundai i30n: KTEC captured the engine bay air intake, which the manufacturer used to create a perfectly fitting large air intake system, resulting in increased power gains.

Alpine A110s: Ongoing work on this project involves scanning the engine bay and intake system for a high-flow induction kit and upgraded charge cooler.

By adopting Scantech’s 3D scanning technology, KTEC now avoids time-consuming manual part drafting. The precise measurements from the SIMSCAN reduce the risk of errors, ensuring accurate component production.

As a result, KTEC achieves reliable, high-quality output while minimizing costly mistakes.

The implementation of the SIMSCAN 3D scanner has brought significant benefits. We have drastically reduced turnaround times, delivering high-quality work promptly.

This efficiency not only saves time and money for our clients but also optimizes our internal processes and resource allocation.
